Mood Board
Putting together my mood board for my magazine really helped me realized what kinds of colors, fonts, textures, and photos I want for my actual magazine. It also helped direct my idea from a vague concept to a more specific one.
As I was looking through the different magazines from which I cut my pictures and words, I realized that I want a brighter color scheme to reflect my magazines theme about happiness and optimism. In the image I tried to include a lot of green and yellow with pops of red, which I circled in red to the left. At first, I had issues picking out the colors. I had purple and pink in mind, but I had to go with yellow and green because it just fit my magazine so well. The green is very natural looking and bright like a grass green rather than the darker shades of green like olive which will relate to the natural vibe I want to go for. The yellow is bright like the sun and exudes cheerfulness which will be the theme of my magazine: being “happy.” Lastly, the pops of cherry red add some variety to the color scheme and attract readers.
At first I had trouble deciding if I wanted a Sans Serif font or a Serif font. Honestly, I am still a little indecisive in this aspect; but what I do know is that I want the font letters
to be thick like where it says “love more” in my mood board rather than thin and fragile like the word “optimism” right above it. I’m leaning more toward a Sans Serif font and that is why in my mood board you can see there are more words with that type of font rather than Serif. I think the Sans Serif font is bubbly and happy rather than a more serious and sophisticated Serif font.

As for texture and pictures, I wanted to go with very natural and free flowing pictures for my mood board. Like I’ve mentioned, I want my magazine to be very nature oriented with topics about happiness and optimism, so that is why I picked a lot of of pictures that involved flowers and leaves. I feel like these images give off the “free flowing” texture to the mood board, like you could feel the softness of the petals and the breeze flowing through the garden.
I knew the models in my mood board had to be very happy and smiling to match with my theme. The picture to the left of the mood board I think is perfect for my magazine; it’s just what I wanted – she looks like she is enjoying life and she happens to be in a field of flowers which is perfect. In my opinion, it was the best picture on my mood board; I wish it had been bigger so I could have put it in the center. That’s not to take away from the picture of the woman smiling which I liked a lot as well. She looks happy and empowered, which will be a sub theme of my magazine, and her shirt has roses which once again goes back to the flower/nature theme.

Lastly, something that really focused my idea were the words that I found and put into my mood board. To be truthful, I didn’t really know what I was going to do; but as I flipped through the magazines to cut pictures out for my mood board the positive words like “happy!” and “love” stood out to me and phrases like “melt their hearts” melted MY heart! That's when I knew that my magazine
had to be about positivism and I had to cut out all the cheerful words and phrases I found. I loved the one that says “made you smile,” and that’s why I put it in the middle because that is what I want my magazine to do: make others smile. Words like “optimism” embody the mood of my magazine and although it didn’t follow the font that I want for my magazine I put it for the word itself.

Overall, the this project really helped me orientate myself towards a specific color scheme and theme for my future magazine, and I’m glad I have this mood board to look at when I’m feeling lost in this process.
