Nylon Cover (Genre Research)

After much thought I decided that I wanted my magazine to center around women of all ages and
ways to empower them whether it is through music, beauty, or fashion. I actually had trouble finding magazines that could convey this message because while there were many magazine about beauty and fashion its focus was not necessarily empowering women but rather using them as models and encouraging other women to change themselves to be like those models. This is something I found quite troubling but it only inspired me to search further and to create my magazine. I did find magazines in the feminism genre online but they were not available for me to open and see without a subscription. Eventually I found "Nylon" on the Miami-Dade Public Library system and although it is not exactly how I want my magazine to be, it is in the genre.

I focused on 3 covers and while I analyzed them I noticed that the masthead is always in the same place and it is in sans serif to have a more modern and bold look to it. In regards to the models of the covers they are of all shapes and ethnicity to represent the diversity of women in the world and to show that no one type of woman is better or more worthy of being on the cover than another. Additionally, the models are always the main focus of the cover and and in the center so much so that the color scheme of the magazine comes from their clothing. You can see this in the issue featuring Gabourey Sidibe the orangey-yellow letters come from her blouse. In the Marina issue the masthead color comes from the slight eyeliner on her and the pink-red letters come from the turtle neck portion of her shirt. Moreover, this magazine features empowering words and phrases in reference to women. For example, in the Marina cover it says "the sound of feminism now" which is exactly the genre my
magazine is going for except it would be more than just music (sound.) In the Gabourey Sidibe cover it says "yaaas, queen" which would be considered another empowering phrase. Lastly, in the Abbi and Ilana cover theres a quote that reads "just being ourselves is resistance." I love that this magazine makes it a point to include strong, independent and creative women from different industries. Additionally, I like how it quotes and prints positive phrases in reference to women.
Lastly, Nylon make different issues with different topics that could appeal to and empower women. The Marina cover is "the music issue"
Gabourey cover is "the beauty issue" and the Abbi and Ilana cover is "the denim issue." Additionally, there is "the young Hollywood issue" and "the it girl issue."              Overall, I am glad to have had found this magazine in a sea of Vogues and Cosmos. This genre is one worth researching more into. There should be more magazines
that aim to encourage women of all ages to be themselves, whomever that may be. I will keep this magazine in mind when doing my own, especially its simple but bold look as well as the importance of the models in the color scheme and cover in general. I will also make sure to have strong, confident women and a bit of what they have to say in my magazine. On the other hand, I would like to keep my magazine more diverse in reference to the topics I will cover and focus a bit more on women issues rather than just music or just beauty like Nylon does.
