Analyzing My Feature Spread

For my feature spread I included the same model as the cover.
As I mentioned previously, she is 24 years old. For that reason, I think she would appeal to my target age group of late teens to mid-thirties. Young women will relate to her and either look up to her as someone older or remember themselves that age because she is younger. The way she is posing makes this spread friendlier and more fun. By tilting her head off to the side and smiling she gives off a subtle nice ‘girl next door’ look. Her smile is inviting and urges the reader to keep on reading because she gives off a welcoming vibe. The bright pink life preserver adds to the color scheme of the spread and plays nicely with the hot pink border and drop cap letter.
Talking about the color scheme, the simple but bold yellow, pink, white, and black gives off a modern and playful vibe but also is simple enough to appeal to an older audience. The actual text is extremely appropriate for the purpose of the magazine. When I began this magazine, I stated that the goal would be to empower women and praise courageous women. This article does just that by showcasing a woman who is both traditionally feminine and likes/does things that are traditionally considered “masculine.” I immediately juxtaposed her basketball playing career, which is usually thought of a “boy sport,” with her beauty pageant career which is considered more “girly.”
I used the parts of her interview that serves as inspiration for other women and directly addresses the reader such as “you can be both.” Towards the end, the direct address also encourages and empowers the reader by saying to “never doubt yourself and create your own path.” Another way to entice the reader in the article was to say, “we don’t have to fit into societies little boxes.” The word “we” includes the magazine and the reader and brings the reader more into the magazine. Lastly, the inspirational quote on the right hand side goes with the overall theme and leaves the reader with a reminder of what this magazine stands for: the empowerment of women. Because it is highlighted in yellow, it will be one of the parts that sticks most onto the reader's mind.
