Nylon Target Audience (Genre Research)
Based on all that I have discussed in my previous genre research posts, I believe that the target audience for nylon are women in their early to mid twenties who are feminists or at least interested in motivating and supporting themselves and other women. I deduced this from the models, the colors and fonts, and the topics they talk about.
As you may have noticed all the models are generally young, although they are mostly in their late twenties to early early thirties I still believe the magazine is aimed for women younger than them because they are like inspiration, someone to look up to. The models talk from experience and represent the women that others want to be in the next few years. You can tell this from the way they talk in the spreads. Like I mentioned in an earlier most Gabourey Sibiles talks about her youth (I grew up pretending I was okay when I wasn't) and so does Abbi Jacobson when she mentions that when she was younger she didn't think that she knew about politics enough or that she was uninformed. Even their outfits are geared towards a younger audience. They are colorful, fun and fashionable. They wear shorts and denim jackets and daring heels like the ones that Ilana Glazer wears that say "cold like ice." To add on, the models are all clothed women so they attract more women rather than men
The colors in the magazine are bright and bold, they are colors that most older women would not wear nor like. I think older women would prefer a more neutral color scheme like black, white, grays, navy blues, etc. rather than sunshine yellow, hot pink, and an electric blue like the one showed in the Gabourey issue. The font instead of being thin and serif to give off a classy vibe, are instead sans serif and ranged from blocky to curvy to having diamonds on them. This a more modern choice of font something that will appeal specifically to younger crowds
Now, the content really is what makes me sure this is a magazine for women. In nylon, they talk about women's issues, fashion, makeup and other topics deemed "feminine." If they were targeting men then surely they would in more traditionally masculine features like a cars section or sports section or at the very least have a male model in the cover.
After research online, I realized that the Nylon website did not have much to offer in specifics about their target
audience online although they have a video I will talk about later. Overall, various websites seemed to confirm that nylons target audience is females between the ages of 18-35, a range which is a bit older than I thought but still around the area I figured. Surprisingly, even though this magazine is geared for women there is another version nylon for men called nylon: guys. I found out about this because when I was on nylon.com and I went to their about page all they had was a video. This video, aside from further describing their target audience as young people who are bold, genuine, and true to themselves, featured men. This got me thinking that there could be a chance that there is a men's edition and surely enough there it was! Mostly, I think my prediction was pretty accurate with the intended target audience because the magazines codes and conventions are so clear.
